Studying abroad after college while working is increasingly popular. Many people choose to work for a few years to clearly determine their direction, accumulate finances, and then study for a master's or MBA. Work experience is a big advantage, but the resume of a working person also has different points from that of a recent graduate. This article summarizes what you need to prepare.
Advantages and challenges of working people
Advantage
- Clear goals: you know what you need to learn to solve real problems at work. This makes essays and interviews more convincing.
- Priority is given to many programs and scholarships: for example, the Chevening scholarship requires a minimum of 2,800 hours of work experience after graduating from university, equivalent to about 2 years full-time. That time can include full-time, part-time, volunteering or internships. MBA programs typically expect applicants to have several years of experience.
- Finances are more proactive thanks to accumulate income.
Challenge
- Academic knowledge and standardized test-taking skills (IELTS, GMAT, GRE) may have become "cold".
- Must balance work, family, and children during preparation.
- Risk of career interruption; Some countries also carefully consider the reasons for leaving a stable job to go to school.
Postgraduate study abroad application after working

| Papers | Points to note for working people |
|---|---|
| University degree and transcript | Ask for copies or notarized translations early because the old school may take time to process |
| CV/Resume | Tap on measurable achievements, management responsibilities, and notable projects |
| Letter of introduction | Usually 1–2 letters from direct superiors are needed, combined with 1 academic letter if required by the program |
| Essay (SOP, Personal Statement) | Connect current experience, knowledge gaps, and post-graduation goals |
| Foreign language certificate, GMAT/GRE | Spend 3–6 months studying for the exam; Check to see if the program waives GMAT/GRE for experienced candidates |
| Job confirmation | Labor contract, work confirmation, salary statement. This is also financial and binding proof when applying for a visa |
CV: write according to results, not according to the job
Instead of writing "in charge of product marketing", write clearly what you did and what results you achieved: budget size, number of managers, growth rate. See sample and presentation here Write an academic CV to apply for a scholarship.
Letter of recommendation from superior
Choose someone who directly manages you and understands your abilities, instead of choosing someone with a high position but rarely works with you. Give at least 4–6 weeks notice and give them a summary of the projects you've worked on. Reference How to ask for a convincing letter of recommendation.
Essay: answer the question "why now?"
Working people need to explain why they choose to study at this time, what the program can compensate for their career, and specific plans after graduation. Reference Personal Statement essay structure.
Organize work, finances and family
- Leave work or leave without pay: some businesses and agencies allow leave without pay or send them to study. Documents confirming the company's position upon return are a plus in terms of ties with Vietnam when applying for a visa.
- Social insurance: learn about the regulations on reserving payment time before quitting your job.
- Finance: prepare enough expenses according to the visa requirements of the destination country. See Proof of finances for studying abroad.
- Family: If you want to bring your spouse or children with you, you need to find out about dependent visas and additional costs. See Bring your family while studying abroad.
Preparation roadmap 12–18 months
- Months 1–3: determine major, country, list of schools and scholarships; Start studying foreign languages.
- April–June: IELTS/GMAT/GRE test; Contact the person who wrote the letter of recommendation.
- June–September: write essays, complete CV, submit scholarship and school applications.
- September–December: interview, receive results, choose school.
- 3–4 months before admission: apply for visa, hand over work, book tickets and accommodation.
