The Erasmus Mundus scholarship is one of the most prestigious master's scholarships in Europe, funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ program. A special feature is that you study a joint master's program (Erasmus Mundus Joint Master - EMJM) in at least two European countries, receiving a double or joint degree. This article helps you understand the mechanism, benefits and how to prepare documents.
Main content
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Mechanism
Each EMJM program is jointly developed by a consortium of European universities, sometimes with additional non-European partners. According to the European Educational and Cultural Executive Agency (EACEA), the program lasts 12, 18 or 24 months (60, 90 or 120 ECTS). Students study in at least two different countries, for example first year in Belgium, second year in Spain, with an internship or thesis in a third country.
Important: there is no one-size-fits-all application for every program. You apply directly to each alliance on the program website, and the scholarship is considered with your admission application. Not all EMJM programs have scholarships available every year, so you should read the information for each program carefully.
Erasmus Mundus scholarship benefits

According to information published by EMJM programs (Erasmus+ period 2021–2027), scholarships usually include:
| Category | Content |
|---|---|
| Participation costs | Covered: tuition, insurance and program participation costs |
| Living allowance | 1,400 euros/month for the duration of study (according to recently applied rates) |
| Time | Entire program duration (up to 24 months) |
| Travel expenses, stable | Depends on the program; students often make their own arrangements from grants |
Some general conditions: only full-time students are admitted; People who have received EMJM scholarships cannot receive them again; Not eligible for other EU-funded scholarships for the same program. 1,400 euros/month is enough to cover living expenses in most European cities if spent reasonably.
How to find and choose a program
- Look up the EMJM catalog on the EACEA site: filter by industry, country, language of instruction.
- Read the program page carefully: entry conditions, country roadmap, expected number of scholarships, submission deadline.
- Choose 2–4 programs that best fit your academic background; Many programs allow parallel submission.
- Note the deadline: most programs accept applications from around October to January for the next school year.
Fields with many EMJMs include engineering, environment, energy, data science, public health, international relations, European studies, tourism, education. Read more Strategies for choosing majors and schools when hunting for master's scholarships and scholarships for STEM majors.

Prepare for a watery life
Studying in multiple countries means you may have to apply for visas and residence permits in each country, move between years and travel multiple times. The program coordinator usually assists with the procedure, but you should:
- Keep scanned copies of all important documents and update insurance when moving countries.
- Estimate the initial amount for house deposit and residence fee before receiving the first month's allowance.
- Plan to pack light, because you will move house at least once.
With multi-stop journeys, one-way or round-trip tickets are a question worth considering; see One-way or round-trip tickets when studying abroad.
