Packing a 46kg study abroad suitcase sounds simple: two suitcases, each 23kg. But in reality, many people are charged an overweight fee because this suitcase is 26kg, that suitcase is 20kg, or the suitcase is oversized. Some people were forced to open their suitcases in the middle of the airport lobby to move things. This article helps you understand the correct regulations and pack things neatly and at the right weight right from home.
Correct understanding of 46kg: 2 pieces or total weight?
Airlines apply two methods of calculating checked baggage:
- Calculated by piece (piece concept): popular on routes to/from the Americas. For example, “2 pieces” means each piece has a maximum weight of 23kg in economy class and is usually limited to a total of 158cm. This suitcase's lightness doesn't make up for the fact that the other suitcase is heavy.
- Calculated by total weight (weight concept): for example 30kg, 35kg, 40kg; The number of packages is unlimited but the total does not exceed the allowed limit. Some brands have their own size limits.
Regardless of the calculation method, most companies stipulate that a package must not exceed 32kg for labor safety reasons for loading and unloading staff. For example, Qatar Airways clearly states that no checked baggage can exceed 32kg on all routes. Oversized baggage may have to be sent as freight.
The specific baggage allowance depends on the airline, ticket class and itinerary. See summary here International checked baggage for international students and Vietnam Airlines luggage.
Choose the right suitcase

| Criteria | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Size | Large suitcases of about 28–29 inches usually fit the limit of 158cm in total three dimensions; Always measure both the wheel and handle physically |
| Shell weight | The suitcase can weigh 4–5kg. Choose a lightweight suitcase to save weight for your belongings |
| Material | Hard shell (PC, ABS) protects fragile items well; Soft shell is lighter and more stretchy |
| Wheels, locks | 4 360° rotating wheels, TSA lock if flying to or transiting the US |
| Identification | Name tag with phone number and email; Tie a colored string or stick a sticker for easy identification |
Two large suitcases stuffed to the brim can easily exceed 23kg. Many people choose a large suitcase for light, bulky items (clothes, thin blankets) and a medium suitcase for heavy items (books, kitchen utensils).
Tips for packing a 46kg study abroad suitcase compactly and correctly
1. Make a list and weigh it early
Use checklist in the lesson Study abroad luggage: things to bring and things to buy abroad, eliminating items purchased in the destination country. Try packing at least 3-5 days before your flight.
2. Sort by class
- Bottom of suitcase (wheel side): heavy items such as shoes, books, kitchen utensils. The suitcase will stand firm and pull lighter.
- Middle: roll clothes or use packing cube.
- Top: items that need to be picked up quickly, light items.
- Gaps: stuff socks and underwear into shoes and suitcase corners.
3. Volume reduction
- Roll clothes instead of folding them.
- Use vacuum bags for coats and thin blankets. Note that the bag only reduces volume, not weight, so it is easy to become overweight.
- Put on your heaviest jacket and shoes when going to the airport.
4. Anti-breakage and anti-spill
- Wrap the bottle in a zip bag and wrap clothes around it; put in the middle of the suitcase.
- Do not place breakable items close to the suitcase.
- Spare batteries and removable lithium batteries that are not checked in: must be kept in hand luggage according to aviation safety regulations.
5. Weigh each suitcase, leaving room for extra
Portable electronic scales are worth buying. Weigh each suitcase individually, aiming for about 22–22.5kg to compensate for errors between home scales and airport scales. Write a list of items in each suitcase for easy declaration when lost (see handling lost luggage).
Dealing with overweight at the airport
- Too little (under 1–2kg): transfer items to an overweight suitcase, or switch to a carry-on bag if it does not exceed the carry-on limit.
- Too much: buy extra pounds or bales. The fee at the counter is usually higher than buying in advance. If you don't want to pay the fee, you can ask a relative to bring the items home.
- Exceeding 32kg/bale: the company may refuse to accept and must divide it into another bale.
- Connecting flight with different airlines: baggage allowance may vary between airlines; Check the regulations that apply to the whole journey. See first transit flight.
Once you have a neat luggage, prepare for the next step: Immigration procedures at Vietnam airport.
Frequently asked questions
Can I bring 1 30kg suitcase and 1 16kg suitcase?
If the ticket is calculated by piece (2 x 23kg), the 30kg suitcase will be charged an overweight fee even if the other suitcase has excess. If the ticket is calculated by total weight, it can still be accepted but each piece should not exceed 32kg.
How many kg of carry-on luggage?
Usually about 7kg for economy class, including a small personal bag. The specific level depends on each company; Some portable scale companies are quite strict.
Should we use cardboard boxes instead of suitcases?
Yes, if packed well and of the right size. But the box gets wet, tears easily, and is difficult to pull. Suitcases are still a safer choice for international students.
Buy extra luggage in advance or at the airport?
You should buy in advance through the airline or ticket booking agency, it's usually cheaper than buying at the counter.
