New regulations on power banks from July 1, 2026 and prohibited items to bring on planes

From July 1, 2026, the Vietnam Aviation Administration tightens regulations on transporting backup chargers to reduce the risk of lithium battery explosions on aircraft.

1. Power bank – 5 things to remember

  1. Each passenger carries a maximum of 2 backup chargers.
  2. Required to be kept in carry-on baggage, not checked.
  3. Maximum 100Wh lithium-ion battery (100–160Wh requires manufacturer approval); Lithium metal battery max 2g lithium.
  4. Do not use the power bank to charge other devices and do not recharge the power bank on the plane.
  5. Each charger must be protected against short circuits: kept in the original packaging, with polarity tape, or in a separate plastic bag; Keep it in an easy-to-observe place.

How to calculate Wh: Wh = mAh × V ÷ 1000. For example, 20,000mAh × 3.7V = 74Wh – valid.

2. Liquid

International routes: each bottle ≤ 100ml, all in 1 transparent plastic bag with zipper, capacity ≤ 1 liter. Milk, baby food, and prescription medications are given in reasonable amounts.

3. Alcoholic beverages (checked)

Below 24% unlimited; 24–70% maximum 5 liters/person, original packaging; Over 70% are prohibited from shipping.

4. Prohibited items
