Exit procedures at Vietnam airports are not complicated, but for international students flying internationally for the first time, carrying a lot of luggage and documents, just one slow step can easily be confused. This article provides step-by-step instructions at international airports such as Tan Son Nhat, Noi Bai, and Da Nang, along with notes on documents, foreign currency, and security.
Prepare before going to the airport
- Papers: valid passport, visa (sticky or electronic, hard copy), admission letter, CoE/I-20/CAS, insurance, confirmation of accommodation. See Documents needed to carry with you when flying to study abroad.
- Online check-in if allowed by the airline, usually open 24–48 hours before flight time. Some international routes still require document checking at the counter.
- Weigh your luggage at home according to the baggage allowance of the ticket. See pack a 46kg study abroad suitcase.
- Check the terminal: international flights depart from the international terminal, which may be different from the domestic terminal.
- Arrive at the airport early: for international flights, you should arrive about 3 hours before take-off time, earlier during peak season (summer, Tet). Check-in counters usually close about 50–60 minutes before flight time depending on the airline.
Airport exit procedures: 5 steps

| Step | What to do? | Need to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Check in for your flight | Present passport and visa; checked baggage; Get your boarding pass | Ask clearly whether the luggage will be delivered directly to the final destination; Check baggage tags |
| 2. Customs | Declare if you carry foreign currency, cash, or goods in excess of the prescribed limit | Customs declaration (if required) |
| 3. Exit control | Border police check passports, stamp them or go through automatic gates if eligible | Passport, boarding pass |
| 4. Security screening | Put your laptop, liquids, jackets, and belts on the tray | Maximum liquid per bottle is 100ml, stored in a transparent bag |
| 5. Exit the plane door | Watch the screen and be at the gate before boarding time | Boarding pass, passport |
Step 1: Check in for your flight
Airline staff will check visas and immigration documents for the destination country, because the company is responsible if passengers are not eligible for entry. Have your admission letter and visa ready. If the itinerary includes transit, the staff may ask more about transit visas. Double-check the name and destination on your boarding pass and baggage tag.
Step 3: Exit control
Some major international airports have introduced automatic control gates for qualified Vietnamese citizens, often with chip-embedded passports. If you cannot use the automatic gate, you line up at the counter. Please remove glasses, masks, and hats when asked. Passport must be intact and valid. See Passport for international students.
Step 4: Security screening
- Liquid, gel, spray: each bottle no more than 100ml, total no more than 1 liter, stored in a transparent plastic bag with zipper.
- Backup chargers and removable lithium batteries: can only be kept in carry-on baggage, not checked in.
- Sharp objects (knives, large scissors) must be kept in checked baggage.
Declare foreign currency and goods
According to current foreign exchange management regulations, individuals leaving the country carrying foreign currency in cash or Vietnamese Dong in cash in excess of the prescribed limit (reference: over 5,000 USD or other equivalent foreign currency, or over 15,000,000 VND) must declare to the border gate customs. This level may be adjusted, so please check the latest information from the State Bank and Customs authorities before flying.
- International students who need to bring large amounts of money should transfer it to a bank or use a card instead of cash. See Exchange foreign currency, bring cash and cards when studying abroad.
- Gold, high-value goods, and specialized equipment also have their own regulations.
- Note: declaring when leaving Vietnam is one thing; When entering the destination country, you must also comply with that country's declaration regulations. See Immigration to Australia, USA, Canada.
Be careful not to delay
- Say goodbye to your family early: the person seeing you off is usually not allowed to enter the quarantine area. Take time to say goodbye before checking in, don't leave it too late.
- Keep documents in a separate bag for quick access at each step.
- Do not accept pawning items for strangers.
- Check the boarding gate several times because the door may change.
- Cases of temporary exit from the country (for example related to tax obligations, court fees, etc. according to legal regulations) are rare for students, but if the family has legal problems, they should check in advance.
After going through security, the next step may be transit. See first transit flight and item study abroad questions and answers.
