Student visa failure: common causes and how to reapply

Failure to get a student visa is a shock to both students and parents, especially when they have received an admission letter and paid a deposit. However, being rejected once is not the end. If you understand the reasons correctly and prepare carefully, many of you will still get a visa the next time you apply. This article analyzes common reasons and how to effectively resubmit your application.

Common reasons for student visa failure

Each country has its own criteria, but the majority of refusals fall into a few groups of reasons.

1. Cannot prove true learning purpose

The review officer wants to see that you are studying abroad to learn. An illogical study path (for example, having a master's degree but enrolling in an unrelated college program), long unexplained gaps in time, or you not being able to answer questions about the major and school all reduce credibility. Australia evaluates this factor through the Genuine Student (GS) criteria, other countries also consider the same.

2. Finances are not convincing

The balance is sufficient but the origin cannot be explained, the deposit is accumulated right before payment, the guarantor's income is not commensurate with the amount in the savings book. These are very common errors. See more details in the article Prove that you understand your finances for studying abroad correctly so you don't fail.

3. Weak ties with Vietnam (US: article 214(b))

With non-immigrant visas like the F-1, the US Department of State explains that refusal under article 214(b) means that the applicant has not proven that he or she is eligible for that type of visa, or has not shown that the bond is strong enough to return after the period of stay. Constraints considered include work, family, assets, and post-graduation plans.

4. Documents are missing, incorrect or contradictory

5. Untruthful declaration

Fake documents or hiding a history of previous visa refusals are the most serious errors. In addition to being refused, you may be banned from applying for many years, for example the UK and Australia both have regulations banning entry with fraudulent behavior. No “tip” is worth this risk.

Read the rejection letter from each country

The rejection letter is the most important document to prepare for the next submission
The rejection letter is the most important document to prepare for the next submission

The rejection letter is the most important document for starting over. Each country provides different information and complaints rights:

Country The rejection letter usually says Complaints/reviews
US (F-1) Applicable law, commonly 214(b) or 221(g) (needs supplementation) There is no appeal process with 214(b). You can resubmit when new information is available and the fee must be repaid
English (Student) Specific reasons according to each clause If submitted from outside the UK, an administrative review can be requested within 28 days, for a fee. The letter will clearly state whether you have this right or not
Australia (Subclass 500) Criteria not met, such as GS or finance The right to reconsider depends on the place of submission and the type of application, and is stated in the decision letter. Applications submitted outside of Australia usually do not have this right
Canada (Study permit) Reason for refusal, with a note of the officer's decision according to IRCC's transparency policy Can be re-filed once the reasons have been overcome, or seek judicial review at the Federal Court (legal proceedings, need a lawyer)

Read each line in the letter and accurately underline the criteria that were rated unmet. That is the "exercise" you need to solve in the new profile.

How to reapply for a student visa after being refused

Step 1: Do not resubmit immediately with the same documents

Resubmitting the same application will almost certainly produce identical results. The US State Department also recommends resubmitting only when there is new information or circumstances have changed significantly.

Step 2: Correct weaknesses

Step 3: Honestly declare your history of rejection

Most visa applications ask if you have ever been refused a visa. Always answer “yes” and provide complete information. Hiding this could be considered making a false statement.

Step 4: Coordinate with the school

Notify the school immediately to request a postponement of admission to the next semester, and reissue CoE/I-20/CAS if necessary (see What are CoE, I-20, CAS), and ask about the tuition refund policy if you decide not to resubmit. Most schools have a refund policy when students are denied a visa, with a requirement to submit a copy of the refusal letter.

Step 5: Consider backup plans

If the weakness is difficult to overcome in a short time, another country with requirements more suitable to the profile can be considered. However, you need to fully declare your history of rejection when submitting in a new country.

Handling air tickets and admission planning

General advice is not to buy non-refundable tickets before getting your visa. If you need to reserve your fare early, choose a ticket class that allows date changes or refunds with reasonable fees. If you accidentally bought a ticket and your visa was rejected, please immediately contact the place where the ticket was issued to check the exchange and refund conditions before the flight date. Many ticket classes only allow operations before departure time.

Tips from VeDuHoc: VeDuHoc often advises on flexible ticket class selection for students waiting for visas. When results are available, the 30+ Booker team will hunt for the best prices on many brands and continue to monitor prices once you have paid. If a lower price is found, HVSC will refund the difference. If you have to postpone your admission, we support changing flight dates 24/7 via hotline/Zalo 090.1800.918.

Frequently asked questions

Will failing a student visa affect your next visa application?

Yes, in the sense that officials will review the refusal history and evaluate whether the new application has overcome the weaknesses or not. A rejection for general reasons does not necessarily mean a ban. Conversely, a refusal for fraud could result in a multi-year ban.

How long does it take to get a re-interview after being denied a US visa?

There is no mandatory waiting period with a 214(b) refusal. You can book a new appointment and pay the fee again. However, you should only reapply if circumstances or documents have changed significantly.

If my visa is rejected, can I get a tuition refund?

Depends on each school's policy. Most schools refund most of the tuition paid upon receiving a visa refusal letter, possibly minus an administrative fee. Please read carefully the refund terms in your admission letter.

Should I use the "visa pass guarantee" service?

Are not. No one can guarantee the visa outcome, as the decision belongs to the consulate. Be wary of promises like this, especially when accompanied by offers to falsify documents.

Visa failure is a signal to complete the application, not the end. Calmly read the rejection letter, correct the weaknesses, and resubmit when ready. When results are available, VeDuHoc is always ready to help you plan your flight in accordance with your new admission schedule.
