Medical examination for a student visa is a mandatory step for many countries, especially if you stay for 6 months or more. Unlike a regular medical examination, you must have an examination at a clinic designated by the immigration agency and the results are usually sent directly to the visa agency. This article summarizes the requirements for each country, the process and notes to help you get tested once and for all.
Why do I need to have a health check when applying for a student visa?
Countries require medical examinations to protect public health, especially to prevent tuberculosis (TB), and to assess whether the visa applicant's health status will cause large costs to the health system. According to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, assessment is based solely on medical conditions; Private insurance or self-payment are not considered alternatives.
This does not mean that people with chronic illnesses will be turned away. In most cases, you only need to declare truthfully, provide treatment records and follow additional instructions if any.
Health examination requirements by country

| Country | Common requests for Vietnamese international students | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | Health examination at the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs, at a designated doctor (panel physician) | You can have an examination before submitting your visa if you have an examination code (HAP ID). |
| Canada | Usually required when staying more than 6 months and have lived in a designated country, or work related to public health | Upfront examination is possible; Results are valid for 12 months |
| You | Tuberculosis (TB) test if staying 6 months or more and living in a country on the list (including Vietnam) | The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of X-ray |
| the USA | F-1 visas usually do not require a consular medical examination | Schools may require vaccination records and tuberculosis testing upon admission |
| Korea, Japan, other countries | Depending on the type of visa and regulations from time to time; In some cases, a TB test certificate or health examination certificate is required | Check the consulate's instructions |
Specific requirements may change, so please check the official page when preparing your application. See details of each country in the articles Australian student visa subclass 500, Canadian study permit and UK study visa.
Medical examination process for student visa application
- Determine whether examination is needed: based on visa agency instructions, request letter after application or online screening tool.
- Receive an examination code or referral (eg HAP ID for Australia, IRCC examination instructions for Canada).
- Make an appointment at the designated clinic. In Vietnam, these clinics are often found in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; The list is published on the official page of each country.
- For examination: bring original passport, referral letter, photo (if required), current glasses/contact lenses, medical records and vaccination book. The content usually includes a general examination, chest X-ray, and possible blood or urine tests depending on age and requirements.
- Receive results: the clinic electronically sends it to the visa agency or issues a certificate (such as a British tuberculosis test certificate) for you to submit with your application.
The time from examination to results being sent is usually a few working days, but can take longer if additional testing is needed, for example when an X-ray shows an abnormality. Get examined early, in parallel with the steps in Study abroad application checklist.
Be careful not to have to re-examine
- Correct designated clinic: results from other hospitals are not accepted.
- Note the time limit: test results often have limited validity (for example, 12 months for Canada, UK TB test certificate is valid for 6 months). Examination too early may require re-examination if the application is prolonged.
- honestly declare your medical history, especially any tuberculosis you have ever treated; Bring all treatment documents to shorten the review time.
- Pregnant women should notify in advance to receive instructions about X-rays.
- Children under 18 years old Must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. See article Study abroad documents for students under 18 years old.
- Vaccination: prepare vaccination records and translations, because many schools and majors (such as nursing) require them for admission. See Study nursing and medicine in Australia.
