Student visa processing time is the most unpredictable variable in the entire preparation journey. Some applications are approved within a few days, while others have to wait for weeks during peak season. Knowing the timeline of each country and the earliest time allowed to submit will help you plan your admission and book air tickets without having to race to the next date.
Study visa processing time for different countries (reference)
The table below is compiled according to the public guidance of immigration authorities of each country, as of the time of updating this article. Actual times vary by season and by record, so always check the official lookup tool before making plans.
| Country | Submitted/issued at the earliest | Common review time | Get entry before the course |
|---|---|---|---|
| US (F-1) | Visas can be issued up to 365 days before the course start date on the I-20 | Mainly depends on interview schedule; After the interview, it usually takes a few working days if there is no additional consideration | Maximum 30 days before start date (new students) |
| English (Student) | Maximum 6 months before the course starts | Usually about 3 weeks for applications submitted outside the UK; Paid priority service available | According to the validity date stated on the visa |
| Australia (Subclass 500) | After having CoE | Varies by major and profile; Look up using Home Affairs' tool | Usually up to 90 days before the course (courses of 10 months or more) |
| Canada (Study permit) | After receiving the admission letter and required documents | Varies by country of submission; See IRCC's processing time tool | Not too early compared to the enrollment date listed on the letter |

| Germany (national visa D) | After receiving admission letter and blocked account | Waiting time for an appointment can be long, processing documents usually takes several weeks | According to visa validity |
Note separately for each country

USA: the bottleneck lies in the interview schedule
The U.S. Department of State recommends applying early because interview wait times vary by location, season, and visa type. Summer (May–August) is peak season for F-1 visas. As soon as you have your I-20 and have paid the SEVIS fee, schedule an appointment. See details US student visa F-1, I-20, SEVIS fee. Note: even though the visa is issued early, new students can only enter the country within 30 days before the start date on the I-20.
UK: do not file earlier than 6 months
You need to have CAS and meet financial requirements (money maintained in account according to regulations) before submitting. See more UK student visa: CAS, points and financial proof.
Australia: enough documents from the beginning for quick processing
Home Affairs encourages submitting complete documents (OSHC insurance, financial proof, English, Genuine Student) to avoid additional requirements. Health examination should be done early because the results need time to be transferred to the system. See Australian student visa subclass 500.
Canada: see processing time tool
IRCC publishes study permit processing times for each country of application and updates periodically. The application may also require biometrics and a medical exam, so add time for these steps.
Japan and Korea: depends on school and admission period
In Japan, the school or Japanese language school often submits the COE application on your behalf many months before the enrollment period (January, April, July, October). For Korea, the D-2/D-4 application depends on the admission notice and regulations of the Embassy and Consulate General in each stage.
Factors that slow down review time
- Peak season: June–August for fall terms (US, UK, Canada) and November–January for February terms (Australia).
- Missing documents: being asked for additional documents can take several weeks.
- Additional administrative review: for example, US 221(g) visa, common with some engineering industries.
- Health check, biometrics: tight appointment schedule during peak season. See Medical examination for student visa application.
- Passport is about to expire: must change passport before submitting, takes more time.
Suggested timeline: how long in advance should I submit?
The general rule is to submit as soon as you qualify, ideally 2–3 months before your enrollment date, even in countries with fast processing times. A reference timeline for the September admission:
- March–May: receive invitation letter, pay deposit, receive CoE/I-20/CAS.
- April–June: financial preparation, health check, visa application.
- June–July: receive visa, book flight tickets, book accommodation.
- August: prepare luggage, fly over 1-2 weeks before school starts.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy plane tickets before getting a visa?
The US State Department advises against finalizing plans or purchasing tickets before having a visa. If you want to keep the price, choose a ticket class that allows changes or refunds with reasonable fees.
Can I pay a fee for expedited visa processing?
Some countries such as the UK have priority payment services for certain types of visas at certain submission points. The US has procedures for requesting emergency interviews in special cases. Conditions and fees need to be checked on the official site.
What if I submit my visa close to the date of admission?
The risks are very high: you may have to postpone admission, change tickets with high fees or miss orientation week. Many schools allow late arrivals within certain limits, but don't count on it.
Where to look up processing time?
Use the tool on the official site: travel.state.gov (USA), immi.homeaffairs.gov.au (Australia), canada.ca (Canada), gov.uk (UK).
Visa processing time cannot be completely controlled, but you can control early and complete submission. Timeline backwards from the day of admission, leave room for contingency, and let VeDuHoc take care of the airfare when the visa is ready.
