Extending a student visa is a problem that almost everyone encounters when the course lasts longer than expected, learns a new program or transfers to a higher level. After graduation, many people still want to stay and work on a post-graduation visa. Each country has different methods and timelines. If you miss the deadline, you can lose your right to stay. The article summarizes the main points to grasp.
Student visa extension: each country has its own way
- Australia: there is no procedure to "extend" the 500 visa. If you need to study longer than the visa term, you submit a new student visa, with a new CoE, OSHC insurance covering the full time and meet the same criteria as the first time.
- Canada: apply to renew your study permit online before the permit expires. If you submit on time, you can usually continue studying under the old conditions while waiting for the results (called maintaining status).
- USA: F-1 students can stay in the US according to the program term on the I-20 (D/S), not according to the visa expiration date in the passport. If additional time is needed, the school's DSO extends the program end date on the I-20 before it expires. An expired visa only needs to be reapplied when you leave the US and want to return.
- UK: apply for a new Student visa from within the UK if you meet the conditions, need a new CAS and proof of finances according to regulations.

Post-graduation work visa

| Country | Visa type | Main points (according to the most recent publication) |
|---|---|---|
| You | Graduate visa | Applications submitted by December 31, 2026: 2 years; filed from January 1, 2027: 18 months; Doctoral degree: 3 years. Cannot be extended, must be submitted while still valid Student visa in the UK |
| Canada | PGWP | Program 8 months to less than 2 years: maximum equal to study time. From 2 years or more: maybe 3 years. Master from 8 months can be 3 years. Most applicants need a language certificate; some programs must be in an eligible field. The validity period does not exceed the passport validity period; Each person is only granted once |
| Australia | Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) | The deadline depends on the level of study, has an age limit and must be submitted within the specified time after completing the course. Conditions are adjusted quite frequently |
| the USA | OPT, STEM OPT | Post-graduation OPT is usually a maximum of 12 months; Eligible STEM majors may apply for an additional 24-month extension. The DSO is required to propose and submit the I-765 within the specified time frame surrounding the program end date |
Why does passport affect post-graduation visa?
With Canada's PGWP, IRCC clearly states that the permit is only issued during the validity period of the passport. Many other countries also have similar methods. If your passport is about to expire, replace it before submitting it. See Passport for international students.
Prepare from final year
- Keep track of the final result date (final transcript, completion letter) because many deadlines count from this date.
- Take a language certificate first if required by visa type.
- Renew health insurance, prepare criminal records, and have a health check if necessary.
- Plan to find jobs and internships. See post-graduation jobs abroad.
Important note when renewing
- Submit before your visa expires: overdue by even one day can cause you to lose your legal status and affect all future applications.
- Maintain current visa conditions: attend school fully, achieve academic results, comply with overtime work limits. See work part-time while studying abroad.
- Finance and insurance must cover the additional time required.
- Honest information, consistent with previous records.
- Keep documents: application receipt, email from immigration agency, letter from school.
Should I fly back home while waiting for a visa?
This is a very common question during summer and Tet. Short answer: be careful. In some countries, leaving while your application is being processed can cause you to lose your temporary status, prevent you from re-entering under your old status, or jeopardize your application. For American students waiting for OPT, travel also has its own risks. Check with your school's international student department before booking.
Once you are sure, you can refer Air tickets to Tet for international students or set ticket back home with VeDuHoc. Booker's team of 30+ will hunt for prices from many brands; If a lower price is found after you pay, HVSC will refund the difference.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if my student visa is about to expire but I haven't graduated yet?
Immediately contact the school's international student department to confirm the remaining study period, then submit an application to extend or apply for a new visa according to the host country's regulations before the expiration date.
Does an expired F-1 visa in a passport require leaving the US?
Are not. If your I-20 is valid and you maintain student status, you can stay in school. You only need to apply for a new visa if you leave the US and want to return.
Can I apply for a post-graduation visa multiple times?
Usually none, or very limited. For example, Canada's PGWP is only issued once, while the UK's Graduate visa cannot be extended.
Where to look up official conditions?
gov.uk (UK), canada.ca (Canada), immi.homeaffairs.gov.au (Australia), uscis.gov and studyinthestates.dhs.gov (USA).
Renewing your visa and switching to a working visa is a paperwork-intensive process but completely under control if you clearly understand the timeline. Mark your calendars, submit early, and always check for the latest regulations.
