If you fly too close to the start date, you'll easily miss orientation week. If you arrive too early, you'll waste money on temporary accommodation and may encounter visa regulations. So how long before enrolling is appropriate to choose a flight date to study abroad? The answer depends on the visa of the destination country, orientation schedule, check-in date and peak season ticket price. This article helps you balance each factor to confidently finalize your flight date.
Visa regulations: when can you enter the country as soon as possible?
This is the "hard" limit that needs to be checked first, because arriving earlier than allowed may be denied entry.
| Water | Early entry regulations (according to the latest announcement) | Check source |
|---|---|---|
| US (F-1) | New students are allowed to enter the country no earlier than 30 days before the program start date listed on the I-20 | I-20, school's international student office |
| UK (Student visa) | Course over 6 months: arrive soonest 1 month before the course begins; Course of 6 months or less: earliest 1 week. Do not enter the country before the visa validity date | GOV.UK, date on eVisa |
| Australia (subclass 500) | Do not fix a common number for all cases; Many schools recommend not arriving too early (for example, Curtin University recommends no more than 3 weeks before a new course). | Visa grant letter, school instructions |
| Canada, Europe, Asia | According to visa/permit validity and school admission instructions | Admission letter, visa |
Regulations may change, please check the information on your visa, I-20/CoE/CAS and school email. If you are unclear about these documents, read more What are CoE, I-20, CAS.
How long before starting school should I fly?

Within visa limits, a reasonable time period is usually 7–14 days before the start date or at least 2–3 days before orientation week. This range is enough to:
- Recovery after a long flight and jet lag (see Flying at night, flying long distances: how to prevent fatigue and jet lag).
- Check in, buy appliances, phone SIM, transportation card.
- Open a bank account, register with the school, receive a student card.
- Fully participate in orientation - where you receive important information about course registration, visa, insurance and making friends.
When should you arrive earlier?
- You don't have a house yet and need time to view the house and sign the contract.
- You participate in a preparatory English course, an academic preparation program or an early student welcome program.
- Students under 18 years old need time to get acquainted with their homestay family and guardians.
When can it come closer to the date?
- Have confirmed accommodation on the correct check-in date and have lived in that country.
- You transition to the new school year, no orientation required.
Factors to consider when choosing a flight date to study abroad
1. Check-in date
Dormitories usually have fixed check-in dates. Before that date, you must arrange your own temporary accommodation – see Airport pick up and accommodation for the first days.
2. Peak season ticket prices
The weeks before the big admission period (late August - early September for the US, UK, Canada, Europe; February and July for Australia) are the peak season for international students, ticket prices and high luggage space often increase. Flexibility to go back/forward a few days, avoiding weekends can help save significantly. Article Admission schedule and time to book study abroad tickets Detailed analysis for each period.
3. Landing time
Prioritize daytime, business-day landings so that the school office, pick-up service, and network are all operational.
4. Connection time and transit visa
Itineraries with stops need enough time to connect and check the transit visa requirements of the transit country.
5. Exam and graduation schedule in Vietnam
Students who have just graduated from high school should consider the date of receiving their diploma, completing documents, and translating before finalizing their flight date.
Suggested ticket booking schedule according to admission period

- 2–3 months ago: book tickets (can choose flexible tickets if visa is not available), see Study abroad air tickets: when to book, where to book.
- 1 month ago: confirm visa, register for airport pick-up, buy insurance, prepare luggage.
- 1 week ago: check flight times, check in online, prepare carry-on documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can I fly 30 days earlier to travel to the US?
For new F-1 students, the rule is not to enter the country earlier than 30 days before the program start date on the I-20. If you want to arrive earlier, you need to ask the international student office and the competent authority about the appropriate visa type.
Is it okay to arrive after the orientation date?
Many schools allow late arrival within limits, but you may miss important information and some schools require mandatory attendance. Please notify the school in advance if you cannot arrive on time.
Should I book tickets without a visa?
Possible, if you choose flexible exchange/refund tickets or reserve seats. You should not buy cheap, non-refundable tickets when your visa has not been issued yet.
Is it convenient to fly on weekends?
Prices may be higher and school offices are often closed, so landing on a business day is preferred if possible.
