Canada attracts Vietnamese international students thanks to its quality of education, safe environment and post-graduation work policy. When looking for scholarships to study in Canada, you will find funding coming from three levels: the federal government, the provincial government and the universities and colleges themselves. This article helps you understand each group, stay up to date with important changes, and choose the right program for your level of study.
Canadian Government Scholarship
Unlike some countries, Canada does not have large-scale full government scholarships specifically for bachelor's or master's degrees for Vietnamese students. The EduCanada site lists programs for non-Canadians, notably:
- Canada-ASEAN SEED: sponsors short-term study or research exchanges for students from ASEAN countries, through an agreement between a Canadian school and a partner school.
- Study in Canada Scholarships: short-term exchange for students from a number of countries, the list of countries changes each year.
- Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships: for postdoctoral research, open to domestic and foreign candidates.
Important update about Vanier: PhD scholarships Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (previously worth 50,000 CAD/year for 3 years) has stopped accepting applications. Vanier's official page directs candidates to the new unified program, Canada Graduate Research Scholarship – Doctoral. Conditions for international students of new programs should be checked directly on the website of the Canadian research funding councils.
If you are interested in short-term exchange, see more Short-term student exchange scholarships.
Provincial-level study abroad scholarships in Canada

Some provinces have their own graduate scholarships. A typical example is the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS):
- Worth 10,000 CAD for 2 consecutive terms or 15,000 CAD for 3 terms (according to Ontario's OSAP site).
- The province funds two-thirds, the school funds one-third.
- For full-time master's and doctoral students at participating schools; Based on performance, managed by each school.
- Apply through the school, applications usually open around October. Many schools say international students with a study permit can also apply (places are limited) – check with the school's graduate office.
Quebec, British Columbia and several other provinces also have their own programs for international students or graduate students; Conditions and country lists change from year to year.

Scholarships from universities and colleges
Here are the most popular sources of scholarships for Vietnamese students:
Bachelor's degree
Many schools have entrance scholarships for international students based on academic scores, some of which are considered automatically. There are also prestigious scholarships that require nomination from high schools, such as the University of Toronto's Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship or the University of British Columbia's international scholarship program. These scholarships are very competitive, requiring excellent academic achievement along with leadership and community service.
Postgraduate level
Research masters and PhDs are often funded with a package that includes a faculty scholarship and a research assistant/teaching assistant salary. Masters study subjects with less funding. See Master's scholarship hunting strategy.
College level
Colleges have smaller scholarships but also lower tuition, along with co-op programs. Reference Scholarship to study in Canada at college level.
Expenses and extra work: make up for the shortfall

These regulations are subject to change, please check the conditions on your study permit. Study permit procedures are presented in the article Canadian study permit.
