Scholarship to study abroad in the US at community college level (Community College)

Community College scholarships to study abroad in the US are a topic that many Vietnamese families are interested in when they want their children to study in the US at a more reasonable cost. According to EducationUSA (US Department of State), starting from a community college and then transferring to a university according to the 2+2 model often helps save significantly. However, scholarships at this level have their own characteristics that you need to understand.

What is Community College?

Community colleges are 2-year schools, awarding Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degrees, along with technical and vocational programs related to local needs. Credits here can be transferred to study the last 2 years at a 4-year university and receive a bachelor's degree. Many schools have transfer agreements with public universities in the state.

Criteria Community College 4 year university
Tuition Usually significantly lower Higher, especially private schools
Admissions More flexibility More competition, more requirements
Class size Small, close support General classes can be very crowded
International scholarships Less, often semi-partial More diversity in some schools
Degree Associate (2 years) Bachelor (4 years)

Community college scholarships to study abroad in the US: what is the reality?

According to EducationUSA, some community colleges offer financial aid for international students, but it is less common than at four-year universities. Scholarships typically only cover a portion of tuition and living expenses, and may not be available to first-year international students. Popular forms:

Phi Theta Kappa honor society for community college students is also a big plus when applying for transfer scholarships. Read more about undergraduate scholarships in the article hunt for American university scholarships for undergraduate degrees and overview scholarship to study in the US.

University transfer scholarship

This is the biggest "reward" of the 2+2 route. Many universities have scholarships specifically for transfer students, based on GPA at the community college. A strong transition profile typically has:

  1. High and stable GPA, complete prerequisite subjects of intended major.
  2. Leadership activities, clubs, and community projects at school.
  3. Letters of recommendation from lecturers and academic advisors.
  4. The transition essay clearly states the reasons and learning goals.

You should meet with your academic advisor right from the first semester to plan subjects suitable for the school you want to transfer to, avoiding losing credits.

Tips from VeDuHoc: Choose a community college that has a transfer agreement (articulation agreement) with your target university, and ask clearly about the successful transfer rate of international students. This is more important than the small scholarship in the first year.

Overtime and expenses

According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), F-1 students are allowed to work on campus a maximum of 20 hours/week during the semester and full-time during vacations. Working off-campus is only allowed under categories such as CPT and OPT according to regulations. Therefore, working part-time cannot replace financial planning.

To reduce costs, EducationUSA recommends considering schools in areas with low living costs such as the South, Midwest or rural areas, and estimating tuition may increase annually. See more US student visa F-1, I-20, SEVIS fee and Proof of finances for studying abroad.
